Preparation & Participation — 50%
In general, I expect you to come to class, on time and prepared, having done any assigned reading, practice exercises, and writing before class. I expect that you will be an active, conscientious participation in our class discussions and workshops. Coming unprepared, late, leaving early, or behaving disrespectfully (including ignoring the class technology policy) will accumulate as absences. It will be very difficult to get an A in the course if you miss more than 2 classes.
Seminar Discussion
- Reading: [Why is it important that they read?] [How should they approach the readings?] I expect you to have read the assigned readings before our class meeting. Please print out the readings and highlight things you find interesting, write questions you have in the margins, etc. You are required to bring these annotated, physical copies of the readings to class with you, or I will consider you unprepared.
- Practice exercises: Printed and turned in on the due date.
- Reflections: Each week, before our next class meeting, you are required to write a brief reflection on our Reflections page.
- Discussion participant: You are expected to participate in the course discussion. Please be respectful of everyone in the community we are building. Leave space for silence. Etc. If you are distracted during our meeting (e.g. ignoring our technology policy), I will consider you absent from the discussion.
Writing Workshop
- Workshop paper: Print out 16 copies and bring them to class.
- Peer Review Letters: Email your letter to the writer and cc me. There is a form to help you. You do not need to share this with your letter, but you can if you wish.
- Workshop participant
Portfolios — 45%
At the end of each unit, you will submit a portfolio of the paper you have developed in our Writing Workshop. Each portfolio is worth 15% of your final grade. Late portfolios will be accepted for 50% credit. See Late and Missing Work.
Portfolio Requirements
Your portfolio should include the following items:
- Initial Submission - Your original workshop paper
- Peer Reviews - The 3 most helpful peer review letters you received, that you feel contributed most substantially to your revision.

Please offer a Grade Proposal, in which you consider what you have done to address the issues in your draft, ways you have addressed comments you received in our writers workshop (including peer review letters), how the paper has improved, and (if you wish) what might still need work.
5. Optionally, up to 3 other things you created during this unit that you'd like me to see.
Please submit your portfolio by email You should assemble these pieces into a single PDF document, in this order. No other formats will be accepted.
